The metal decides how a piece looks, how it wears and what it takes to look after. Here's what each one means, so you can compare them when you shop.

Metals at a glance

MetalWhat it isGood to know
14K gold58.3% pure gold, often stamped 14K or 585A richer gold color than 10K. A classic choice for fine jewelry.
10K gold41.7% pure gold, often stamped 10K or 417Harder than 14K because it has more of the stronger metals, with a slightly lighter color.
White goldGold mixed with white metals, usually with a bright rhodium coatingThe rhodium can wear over time and can be redone by a jeweler.
Rose and two-tone goldGold mixed with copper for a pink color, or two colors of gold in one pieceThe karat tells you the gold content, whatever the color.
Sterling silver92.5% pure silver, often stamped 925Softer than gold and tarnishes over time, but a polishing cloth brings back the shine.
Gold-plated sterling silverSterling silver with a thin layer of gold on topThe look of gold on a silver base. The plating can wear with daily use.
Stainless steelA strong steel alloyResists scratches and tarnish well, so it suits everyday wear.
TitaniumA very light, strong metalPopular for men's bands because it's so light. Hard to resize, so check your size first.

10K or 14K gold?

  • Choose 14K if you want a richer gold color and a higher gold content.
  • Choose 10K if you want a harder metal for everyday wear at a lower gold content.
  • Both are real, solid gold when listed as 10K or 14K gold. "Gold-plated" is different: that's a thin layer of gold over another metal.

Sensitive skin

Skin reactions are often caused by nickel or other metals in an alloy. Everyone's skin is different and we can't promise how a metal will suit you, so if you know what you react to, ask us before you order. We'll tell you what we know about that piece.

How to read the listing

  • Metal tells you what the piece is made of.
  • Metal weight is the approximate weight of the metal in grams. Two pieces that look alike can differ a lot, and that's often why their prices differ.
  • Karat and carat are different. Karat (K) measures gold purity. Carat measures the weight of a gemstone. Read more about karats and carats.

Yes. 10K gold is 41.7% pure gold mixed with stronger metals. It's real, solid gold, with less gold content than 14K.
What does 925 mean?
925 is the stamp for sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver.
Will gold-plated jewelry last?
The gold layer is thin and can wear with daily use. Taking it off for water, lotion and the gym helps it last longer.
